How to Feed the World?

Most of us know that the solution to world hunger is NOT simply to grow more food. This video, How to feed the world? from Denis van Waerebeke on Vimeo, does a beautiful job of simplifying the story of how things came to be the way they are.

The video is aimed at kids ages 9-14. Given how busy and overwhelmed we adults feel sometimes, I think that's a smart way to get through to us too! He uses simple graphics and straightforward language (no jargon), and he creates a few characters in the story so we can follow how the actions of one affect the others.

Obviously the issue is more complicated than Denis goes into. But what I appreciate about this film is that it provides an in-between level of explanation. It's enough that I learned a lot and I understand more about the issue now than I did before. Yet it's not so much that I feel overwhelmed or helpless. I know that I can do some research and find more specific ways to become part of the solution. I know that I can look for organizations who are taking these steps, and ally myself with them.

Many thanks to Sara Wilson at The Hunger Project (THP) for sharing this video via her blog! And thanks to THP for the excellent work they do every day to help reverse this cycle.
