GJD Talks Drupal in Buenos Aires

While on vacation in Argentina I spent an evening with members of the Buenos Aires Drupal User Group. What a nice bunch of people! We had a fun and lively discussion that touched on a lot of different aspects of Drupal -- technical as well as community-related.

Victor Kane did a presentation about Open Atrium, Features, Context and Spaces (highlighting a lot of Development Seed's work). Leo Fishman brought up the idea of offering more support or training (along the lines of Drupal Dojo) in Spanish, and some of the folks present (myself included) were open to giving talks on particular areas where we're strong.

I would say the overall theme of the evening was the question of how to best to share this fantastic tool we call Drupal, as well as our knowledge of it, with the world at large. We can organize and classify the documentation according to the audience it's intended for (technical/non-technical, novice/intermediate/advanced, etc.). We can also classify it by language (English/Spanish/French, etc.).

A fantastic analogy was made (by Osvaldo Suarez, I think): I can give you a map and show you how to drive from Washington DC to New York. But if you don't know how to operate the car, the map won't do you any good. This illustrates one of the challenges of bringing Drupal to non-techies: I can give you instructions for installing Drupal on your web server, but if you don't know what a web server is or how to get a hosting account, my instructions won't help you. This is the level at which most of the current Drupal documentation exists. We all agreed that we'd like to help Drupal become more accessible to the world at large.
